Getting Started!
Safety compliance is applicable across your entire business activities, no matter how low risk they may seem and regardless of whether or not you have had incidents in the past.

In addition, if you are based in Queensland and have 30 or more employees you are required to appoint a Workplace Health & Safety Officer (WHSO) and a Fire Safety Advisor (FSA) in some instances.  See our service
Safety Officers & FSA under our Services page.

Knowing where to start can be difficult...there are a multitude of Legislative documents to reference and interpret and each State of Australia has differing Legislation.

The following is a guide:

Step 1. Know your Responsibilities & Obligations for Workplace Safety
Step 2.
Consult with your Workers about safety
Step 3.
Identify hazards in your workplace
Step 4. Assess the risk which flows from hazards (using a Risk Score Calculator)
Step 5. Implement suitable controls using "Hierarchy of Controls". Prioritise high risk hazards.
Step 6. Inform, train & supervise. Provide safety induction training to new employees, refresher & on-the-job safety training.  Write suitable Health & Safety Policies, Procedures & Work Instructions, communicate these to workers. Define Safety Roles and Responsibilities, incorporate into Job Descriptions.
Step 7. Consider safety when making purchases of materials & equipment
Step 8. Manage Incidents & Injuries
Step 9.
Maintain appropriate records (eg. workplace inspections, Safe Work Procedures, risk assessments, training, skills analysis, on-the-job training, maintenance, employee details).
Step 10.
Monitor, review & continuously improve existing safety initiatives & work practices.  Keep up to date with the latest Legislative changes.

If you already have good safety initiatives in place and want to achieve the highest National Occupational Safety Standard, consider AS/NZS 4801: Integrated Safety Management Systems, to create a business Occupational Health & Safety Management System (OHSMS). This requires an external audit to assess compliance with the Standard and achieve a nationally recognised accredited status.

These processes can often take a lot of time to work through when you are busy working on your business activities.

Using a professional Safety Consultant / Consulting Firm like Worklaw initially, can assist you to identify compliance gaps and quickly and effectively devise an appropriate action plan to implement safety initiatives and systems.  Then you can self-manage the systems to a compliance level with consulting as required.  See more info on our link
